Abandoned Pets paying the Price of Foreclosures
June 3rd, 2008
More reports are coming in about abandoned pets paying the price of foreclosures. One of the heart-rending stories is about realtor Firelei Almanzar. Going on one of the typical rounds of foreclosed units the discovery was made of a darling dachshund left behind. Firelei wasted no time in adopting it. But not all are lucky like this pet in foreclosure torn Florida.
Two real estate agents told NBC 6’s investigating unit that more and more instances of pets being abandoned are surfacing. In one house the duo found many animals left behind like discarded garbage. Apart from the furniture were abandoned five dogs and a rabbit. One cannot make too harsh a judgment on the owners. They never thought that such a day would arrive. With nothing certain about the roof above their own heads how can they think about the pets? Many landlords are averse to pets. The realtor’s spent most of the first day tending to the pets and trying to fix alternative arrangements for the pet victims of man’s insanity. Many organizations were contacted but most of them were full to their capacity.
The result is that the numbers of street dogs have multiplied. In desperation the people are just allowing the pets to run free and survive by themselves. Most of them running around are from foreclosed houses. Animal workers have many horrendous tales to narrate. Once they found a dog abandoned in a crate in the garage. Fortunately a neighbour heard the barks and rescued it. Many of the stray dogs are becoming aggressive and carriers of diseases. Some of the pets find wonderful homes but the numbers are dwindling. With the rise in price of essentials and gas, more people are opting out of the responsibility of keeping pets.
A warning has been sent out by the authorities against leaving behind pets. If this is done then penalty will be imposed. One can be charged for animal cruelty.
There are many places one can contact for rescuing animals – Adopt-a-Stray, Miami-Dade County Animal Services, The Humane Society of US to name a few. Unfortunately many pets – especially those advanced in age – are being euthanized. The problem is not just with dogs and cats – even pigs, sheep and horses together with rabbits and turtles are left behind. In one case there was a snake. The problem is being complicated by lack of funds as all across the country the credit crunch is being felt.
