Foreclosures Having A Snowballing Effect On The National Health Of USA
November 3rd, 2008

From various surveys being undertaken it is clear that the snowballing effect of foreclosures are telling on the national health of USA.
A report released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners after taking a survey in July noted that 11% of the citizens had either lessened the number of prescribed medicines or they are resorting to cut dosages by splitting the pill into two halves.
Dick Clarke of Healthcare Financial Management Association said that optional surgeries like hip and knee replacements, diagnosis tests and the like have fallen by 1% to 2% during the last few months in many hospitals.
While outdoor patients have decreased, the number of emergency room patients have gone up according to American Hospital Association. The number of uninsured patients in this slot has increased showing that had treatment been started timely this situation would not have arisen. In this foreclosure age the unemployment number has risen from 4.7% to 6.1% since the last twelve months. Inevitably many have not renewed their health insurance.
Shelley is an office manager at Ohio. She is putting the medical needs of her husband before that of hers. He needs kidney and pancreas transplants as well as dozen medications. Each month blood work is required. She lamented that even when times were good the going was tough. Foreclosure stung economy has worsened matters.
Family physician of Idaho Dr. Ted Epperly attends a clinic for the low-income bracket. The patients nowadays consist of pregnant women and those with chronic conditions like pressure, sugar and asthma. Epperly commented, “The longer it goes and the more skipped visits, the greater the opportunity there will be for bad outcomes. It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when.”
Pharmacies like Walgreen having been contacting patients with emotional arguments trying to convince them to refill their prescriptions. They appeal to sentiments like asking them that do they not want to be around when their children or grandchildren grow up?
California is one of the worst foreclosure hit areas. Dr. Ron Sokolov who deals with primary health care said that he saw a 5% decrease in the number visiting him last month compared to the number in the same month in the previous year. It is the number of cash paying patients that have largely gone down. The foreclosure climate has made it a hard choice for many between food and healthcare. Obviously food wins.
