Animal Societies Jump Into Action To Help Foreclosure Pets
May 19th, 2008
It is difficult to forget the lost expressions on the pets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Best Friends Animal Society had jumped in to help. Today many similar animal societies are jumping into action to help foreclosure pets. The current mortgage crisis is no less damaging than any other natural calamity.
Right across the nation pets are found dead or struggling to somehow survive in abandoned foreclosed houses. This is all a fall out from the sub-prime mortgage crisis. The owners cannot be always blamed. Suddenly they find themselves without a roof above their heads. How will they care for the pets if they cannot find shelter for themselves? Some have taken the care to leave the pets at animal shelters but many are just walking away leaving the live creature just as if it was something inanimate like bricks and mortar.
Michael Mountain of Best Friends Animal Society said that they are seeing more and more instances of people ‘dropping the dog off at the shelter and the cat in the local park.’ Often they tie the creature either outside or worse still, inside the foreclosed abandoned house and just drive off.
A house pet can never fend for itself if abandoned. So it is not all right to leave them wild and disappear from the lives of the pets. Liz Finch the department manager of Best Friends Animal Help says that many, cursed with foreclosures, are calling for pet related advice. The calls and e-mails are on the rise.
The personnel of the society give them tips about temporary care (if the situation so demands and there is a specific time frame) – kenneling, boarding at the office of the vet or allowing a friend to foster it for sometime. This will give the owners the time to look for a suitable house where they can set up their homes with the pets. This is if they have the future ability to care for the pet. This is the pivotal question. If the answer is in the affirmative they can then hunt around for pet-friendly accommodations. Best Friends gives concrete support in these matters and links the sufferer with rescue organizations. In special cases specific advice is given. Many options are offered. Realtors too have a large role to play in this matter. It is a question of spreading awareness among the people that pets too need attention while the foreclosure tsunami rages.
