Minor Victims to the Foreclosure Crisis

March 10th, 2009

All the people whose homes are foreclosed are the victims to the mortgage crisis. But the minor victims to the foreclosure crisis are the real sufferers. The adults lose their homes due to their own financial mismanagement – but their children are forced out of their homes for absolutely no fault of theirs. As a result, their lives are affected in many ways – school problems, physical and emotional problems and overall stress. The Brookings Institute has confirmed the fact that in the forthcoming two years, over two million children will be homeless due to the foreclosure crisis.

All the federal government is doing is slashing interest rates. Instead, along with school boards, banks and child advocacy boards, they should be assisting parents in discussing the foreclosure crisis with their children – maybe it could help the kids.

The most important thing to be done is to be absolutely honest with the children. Children are extremely sensitive. He or she may hear his or her parent discuss their financial condition with others. The best way to deal with the situation is to be frank with the child – explain the entire situation in honest and simple language that is easy for them to understand. The parent can say that they have a loan on the house. But the state of affairs is such that the new payment amount is too high for them to pay. So the family must leave the bank to take their home. Therefore, they might have to shift to some other place.

Children should also be given enough time to cope with the situation. They cannot be expected to leave their home overnight. The child’s parents may tell him or her about the present situation – if their home is into foreclosure or if they’re trying to sell the house. The children need to know that it does not happen all too suddenly.

Different age groups react differently to the situation. Quite some issues come up when children are involved in the foreclosure racket. A pre-teen may be upset that he or she has to leave his or her neighbourhood and friends. The most important thing is that the parents must assure their child that they are still a family and they will always be with each other throughout the entire crisis and even in their new home, when all their problems are sorted out.
