Foreclosures Tango With Mosquitoes

May 27th, 2008

Foreclosure numbers are increasing hand in hand with mosquito problems that are posing health hazards for Glendale, Arizona. Foreclosures now tango with mosquitoes. Vector analyst Kara Cox pushed through shoulder high grass and littered debris consisting of stale food cans and auction posters to have her suspicions confirmed. She found a slimy green pool thick with floating algae. The mosquitoes had begun to breed and the clusters of eggs were beginning to hatch. Glendale County has been overwhelmed with calls from neighbours as foreclosures increase with rise in temperatures.

Complaints about ‘green pools’ have risen by about 250% since the previous year. There have been 2,069 complaints during the first five months of this year compared to 597 calls during the same period in 2007, said Johnny Dilone, spokesperson of Maricopa County Environmental Services. Housing experts are anticipating a steady increase in vacant houses as borrowers are surrendering their houses and lenders are not finding buyers.

Nature hates vacuum. Today hordes of mosquitoes have colonized abandoned pools. Public health officials relate foreclosure houses with related health problems. Borrowers are being urged to drain the pools before leaving but the pleas are falling on deaf ears, as they are exit in a state of frustrated despair. The town authorities are doing their best but their existing infrastructure is also being strained at the unprecedented rise in numbers. Meanwhile mosquitoes are taking advantage of the scene – dancing, pairing and multiplying.

Approximately 75% of the calls regarding ‘green pools’ made to the environmental services of Maricopa County since 1st July 2007 are related to abandoned houses. A year ago it was 25%. In all 8,000 mosquitos related calls have been registered and it is expected that by the end of June the number will cross 10,000. With scant resources the time gap between the call and the response has also increased. Today it is 10 days but previously, about a year ago it was 5 days before something was done. The whole operation is relatively new to the county.

The good news is that the neighbours themselves are now taking up the cudgel and doing their bit of the work to stop the spreading of the menace. After all it is their health that is at stake. Apart from the nuisance factor, mosquitoes are carriers of encephalitis and West Nile virus which cause flu like symptoms in humans but can also threaten lives.
