Social Services Unable To Cope With Record Foreclosures

June 13th, 2008

Social service providers have their hands full under normal circumstances from looking after the homeless, the pets, food banks and you name it. But the record number of foreclosures makes it difficult for social services to cope with their work.

The scene in Palatka, Florida is heartrending. Mike’s Dog House is refusing every week about 10 families who are being evicted and have no place to go. In Cleveland it is the same. Already 20 beds have been added to the straining shelter. If refused those affected will have to sleep under the open sky. The personnel at Destiny Foundation in Central Florida are flooded with enquiries. Scott George, the head of the foundation says that they have been seeing people coming who have lost literally everything. They are in a traumatic state. The centre provides counseling, runs a food bank, medical clinic and other related services for free. He adds, “We’ve been inundated and it’s a huge concern for us because it’s overwhelming. And it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.”

Scott could not be far from the truth. On Thursday 12th June, the Mortgage Bankers Association released a report stating that 6.4% of the house owners were behind by at least one payment of mortgage dues during the running second quarter. 1% is already in foreclosure. Both figures are record breaking.

The housing market in the country mires the situation. It is negatively affecting the general economy. Foreclosure houses are increasing at an alarming rate leading to the drop in property prices. Tax collection from properties has gone down. The state, the county and the city governments are cash-strapped. Little wonder then that social service organizations are at their wit’s end to meet rising demands.

Badly affected are the animals – dumb creatures that had never signed any mortgage deeds. Yet they are some of the worst victims. Petfinder.com recently conducted a survey of the pet situation resulting from foreclosures. Half of the pets handed over to the shelters had come from foreclosed owners during the last six months. CompAnimals has a network of 10 foster homes and adoption centre. Its activities are limited by funds and space. It can accommodate about 30 to 40 dogs and the same number of cats at a time. 150 pets are annually adopted. Money comes from donations. Today they have a six-month waiting list. But where will the hapless wait? Under the sky?

My opinion about this topic, social service is the welfare of the people doing social work is a fun to me. I am doing social Service for the sake of God not for any benefit or without any expectation. oppression within the provision of social work services themselves as …. self-esteem, as being unable to cope or make sound decisions and as dependent.
